The program is a full-time residency, not a degree and not a short conference. Fellows are expected to remain in New Haven for the entire period, participate in the program’s activities, contribute to Yale’s intellectual life, and mentor students. Yale also notes that fellows may travel for several days during the fellowship.

The weekly Good Society seminar gives fellows a structured setting to present their work, explain their vision for a better society, and respond to questions from peers. These activities are useful for applicants who want serious dialogue rather than a credential delivered through a passive course schedule.

World Fellows receive individual and group coaching and skills-development training. • Applicants should be between five and twenty-five years into their professional careers.

• Applicants must be citizens of a country other than the United States. Yale says that people with dual United States citizenship may apply, while giving strong preference to candidates whose work is focused outside the United States.
• Applicants must be fluent in English. TOEFL and IELTS scores are not required, but finalists’ English fluency may be assessed in an interview.
• The program does not accept full-time students or full-time academics. It is intended for non-academic practitioners.
• Selected fellows must be available for full-time residence at Yale in New Haven from mid-August through mid-December.

There is no minimum or maximum age limit. Yale’s common-questions page says that the youngest applicant ever accepted was 27 and that the average age of a World Fellow is 39. Those figures describe the program’s experience level; they are not additional eligibility thresholds.

Application materials and steps

When Yale opens the 2027 application, use the official online application rather than a third-party form. Yale describes the process as entirely online, with no paper forms to mail. The application page lists these required materials:

1. Create an account in Yale’s application platform and complete the online form.
2. Upload a résumé or CV of no more than three pages.
3. Write a personal statement of no more than 600 words. Use it to explain your work, the change you are trying to make, and why this residency is the right next step.
4. Enter the names and email addresses of three recommenders. The system sends them instructions for submitting their letters electronically.
5. Record the brief video statement inside the application platform. Yale does not accept a separately hosted video link, and the program’s common questions explain that the video must be recorded using a supported desktop browser.
6. Review every section and submit before the published deadline. Recommendation letters should arrive by the deadline; Yale says letters received up to one week later may be accepted, but their review alongside the application is not guaranteed.

There is no application fee or other cost to apply. A nomination is not required, and Yale says nominated candidates receive no preference over people who apply directly. The 2027 nomination page asks others to suggest candidates and specifically tells people who want to apply themselves to sign up for notification when the application becomes available. Building a credible application

Start with the record of impact, not with a list of aspirations. A useful statement might connect one concrete problem, the interventions you have already led, the evidence that those interventions mattered, and the questions you want to work through at Yale. A title or seniority label is less persuasive than a clear account of what changed because of your decisions.

Keep the résumé within Yale’s three-page limit. Use space for results, reach, scale, and responsibility. If you led a reform, built an institution, changed a policy, created a durable service, or organized people around a difficult public problem, show the outcome and the setting. Do not assume the committee will infer impact from the name of an employer.

Choose recommenders who have seen your judgment and leadership directly. They should be able to describe a difficult situation, your response, the result, and the qualities that suggest future impact. Give them the final résumé, the 600-word statement, the deadline once announced, and a short reminder of the examples you hope they can address. Yale requires letters in English and expects recommenders to submit through the system.

For the video, answer the prompt in your own voice. The recording is brief, so make the first sentence informative. Explain what you do, whom it affects, and what question or challenge motivates you. Practice for clarity, but do not read a densely written script. Yale’s instructions require the recording to happen in the application platform, so test the supported browser and camera before the final attempt.

Selection and timing

Admission is extremely competitive. Yale says it receives several thousand applications for a limited number of fellowships. The selection criteria include extraordinary achievement and integrity, a commitment to positive impact, promise of future leadership and global impact, critical and creative thinking, the likelihood of benefiting from participation, and a willingness to contribute to Yale through the full-time program, student mentoring, and frequent speaking.

Yale says final decisions are sent to successful and unsuccessful applicants by email by the end of April. The program itself begins in mid-August and runs through mid-December. Those dates are useful for planning leave, travel, family arrangements, and visa questions, but they do not replace the 2027 application deadline, which Yale has not yet posted on the application page.
