This is not a call for new ideas. It is a call for things that are nearly ready and need one push to become real.

The Natural Environment Research Council published Advancing Atmospheric and Aerial Autonomy on 3 August 2026. It offers £4 million in total, split into awards of £300,000 to £1 million, for proof-of-concept projects that develop, integrate, deploy and demonstrate autonomous solutions for atmospheric science or autonomous aerial systems for wider environmental applications. NERC will fund 100% of the full economic cost — unusual, and worth noting, since most NERC responsive-mode grants are paid at 80% FEC.

The catch is speed. Projects run for three to twelve months and must start by 1 February 2027. The application guidance repeatedly asks for evidence that you can mobilise immediately and commit a substantial share of project spend through major procurement or investment right after the start date. If your platform, sensor or partnership still needs a year of maturing, this call is the wrong home for it.

What the Money Is Actually For

NERC frames the aim plainly: strengthen the UK’s future environmental observing capability through the development, integration, deployment and demonstration of innovative autonomy, sensing, instrumentation and measurement capabilities.

Two things sit behind that. The first is the future of atmospheric observing — as delivery models change, autonomous technology creates ways to collect atmospheric data more adaptably and more sustainably than the aircraft-and-crew model that has carried UK atmospheric science for decades. The second is the Net Zero Aerial Capability (NZArC) programme, whose findings this call builds on by extending autonomous aerial systems into a broader range of environmental applications.

The scope splits into two roughly equal halves, and NERC has said outright that it expects about 50% of the money to go to each:

Autonomous solutions for atmospheric science. These do not have to fly. Eligible work includes autonomous observational systems, distributed sensing networks, mobile or fixed monitoring platforms, autonomous measurement approaches, sensing technologies, scientific instrumentation, measurement systems and architectures, calibration and validation approaches, and technologies that improve how atmospheric data is collected, processed or exploited.

Autonomous aerial systems for environmental applications. Here, uncrewed aerial systems must be central to the approach. Application areas listed include environmental monitoring and assessment, ecosystem observation, environmental forecasting and prediction, natural hazard monitoring, atmospheric observations, and terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine environments. Supporting technologies — sensors, instrumentation, autonomy software, communications, data systems — can form part of a project as long as the autonomous aerial capability stays at the centre.

A project may contribute to one or both areas. NERC does not require you to pick a lane, and says funding recommendations will weigh both project quality and overall portfolio balance.

Who Should Apply — and Who Should Not

The project lead must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for NERC funding. Beyond that, the eligibility text is deliberately wide: academic researchers of any career stage, research and technical staff including engineers, technicians and specialists, and multidisciplinary teams that combine environmental science, engineering, robotics, data science or related disciplines.

That inclusion of technical staff is not decorative. NERC explicitly encourages the involvement of research technical professionals, engineers and technologists where they contribute to developing, deploying or operating environmental observing capability, and points applicants at the Technician Commitment and the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. If the person who actually knows how to integrate the payload is a technician rather than a professor, this call gives you a reason to put them on the application properly rather than in the acknowledgements.

You cannot lead if you are not at a NERC-eligible UK research organisation, or if your organisation does not meet UKRI eligibility requirements more broadly. International researchers and organisations can join where they bring expertise or capability that strengthens the work, but no funding is available for international project co-lead costs; international organisations are expected to fund their own participation. Where you list an international project co-lead, enter zero requested costs and describe what the collaborator contributes.

Industry partnership is encouraged but is not an eligibility requirement. NERC developed the call with input from across UKRI including Innovate UK, and says projects should show meaningful partnerships with organisations involved in developing, deploying or applying autonomous systems and sensing technologies. Read that as: a proposal with no route to a user or operator will look thin, even if it is technically excellent.

Deliverability Is the Real Assessment Criterion

Most funding calls ask whether an idea is good. This one asks, at length, whether you can pull it off in under a year.

The guidance asks you to demonstrate access to the facilities, platforms, sensors, instrumentation, infrastructure and data systems you need; appropriate operational partnerships; institutional support for rapid project initiation; realistic deployment and delivery plans; calibration, validation and data quality assurance plans where relevant; and a credible plan to mobilise rapidly and start activity immediately after award. Successful projects will have to evidence mobilisation, progress and delivery against agreed milestones during the award.

It also asks you to identify significant dependencies up front — procurement, recruitment, regulatory approvals, access arrangements, specialist equipment or facilities — and explain how you will manage them. For anything involving uncrewed aircraft, regulatory approval is the dependency most likely to sink a twelve-month timeline. If your demonstration requires a flight permission you do not yet hold, say so, say where you are in the process, and say what you will fly if it slips.

Capital costs are in scope, which matters. NERC will fund equipment and component costs tied to capability development, integration, installation, testing, benchmarking and validation, technical staff effort on capability development, software and data system development that creates new capability, and the activities needed to bring an asset into usable operational state. What you must do is explain clearly how each requested cost contributes to developing, integrating, deploying or demonstrating capability. Assessors are not looking for a line-by-line breakdown; they are looking for justification of the expensive items and a case that the whole package is good value.

How to Apply

Applications go through the UKRI Funding Service. Je-S is not an option, so confirm your organisation is registered before you start.

The process: select ‘Start application’ on the Funding finder page, confirm you are the project lead, sign in or create a Funding Service account, and answer the questions directly in the text boxes. You can save and return, or draft offline and paste in. The project lead completes the application, but only the lead research organisation can submit it, and it goes via your research office — which will also run hosting and financial eligibility checks. Build that internal turnaround into your own timetable; institutional deadlines will sit well before 21 October.

The written sections and their word limits are:

  • Summary — 550 words, in plain English, used to help identify assessors and likely to be published if you are funded
  • Vision — 500 words, on what you hope to achieve
  • Approach — 2,500 words, on how you will manage and deliver the capability
  • Applicant and team capability to deliver — 1,650 words total, of which 1,150 are for Résumé for Research and Innovation (R4RI) modules and up to 500 for optional Additions
  • Resources and cost justification — 1,000 words
  • Data management and sharing — 500 words, meeting UKRI’s data sharing policy
  • Facilities — 250 words, naming only facilities from UKRI’s facility information list

You will also complete sections on ethics and responsible research and innovation, animal involvement and the 3Rs, genetically modified organisms, human participation, project partners, and Trusted Research and Innovation. The TR&I questions cover which areas of the National Security and Investment Act your project touches, who you intend to collaborate with, and whether you need an export control licence — answers there can change the terms and conditions of any award.

Images are permitted where they carry visual information that words cannot, but each needs a descriptive caption inside the text box that counts towards your word limit, files must be under 5MB, and applications containing paragraphs of text, tables or excessive images as images will be rejected. References sit inside the word count of the relevant section. Generative AI may be used to help prepare an application, with caution, under UKRI’s published policy.

How It Will Be Assessed

Applications first pass UKRI eligibility and administrative checks. Eligible ones then go to an expert assessment panel spanning environmental science, atmospheric science, autonomy, sensing, instrumentation, engineering and environmental applications, with a chair overseeing consistency. The panel makes recommendations; NERC makes the final decision using a portfolio approach designed to fund a diverse set of projects and to keep the roughly even balance between atmospheric capability and wider environmental applications.

The assessment areas are vision, approach, applicant and team capability to deliver, ethics and RRI, and project partners. Deliverability and readiness are considered throughout rather than being a separate box.

Two procedural points are worth flagging. Demand management is not currently applied, but UKRI reserves the right to cap application numbers if interest exceeds what the process can handle. Separately, if application volume is significantly higher than expected, NERC may add a shortlisting stage before full assessment. Neither is announced; both would be communicated if triggered. Plan as though your application will be read in full, but do not assume a second chance to clarify — once submitted, applications cannot be changed or amended.

NERC aims to complete assessment within three months of receiving an application. With a 21 October close and a 1 February 2027 latest start, the timeline is tight by design, which is another reason the call keeps asking about rapid mobilisation.

Preparation Strategy

Start from the demonstrator, not the science question. The strongest framing for this call is: here is a capability that nearly exists, here is the gap between it and something deployable, here is what twelve months and £600,000 closes. NERC says it wants projects that rapidly translate existing technologies, platforms, sensors, instrumentation, measurement systems and expertise into deployable capability with lasting benefit.

Name your users and evidence their need. The Vision criteria ask you to meet the evidenced needs of clearly identified user groups and to show how the capability could improve the quality, coverage, reliability, accessibility or utility of environmental observations. A letter or a documented requirement from an operational user is worth more than a paragraph asserting demand.

Take data quality seriously. Calibration, validation, uncertainty and bias appear in both the scope and the Approach criteria. Novel autonomous platforms produce measurements whose traceability is exactly what a sceptical panel will probe. Say how you will establish it.

Plan for life after the grant. Assessors are asked whether the capability can be used, accessed, adopted or built on beyond the project, and whether there is a pathway to wider deployment, adoption, application or commercialisation where appropriate. A demonstrator that lands back in a cupboard in February 2028 is a weak outcome.

Sort procurement before you write. If a twelve-month project needs a six-month lead-time component, the panel will notice. Get quotes, get supplier confirmations, and state the lead times in the Approach section rather than leaving assessors to guess.

Go to the webinar. It runs on 10 September 2026 at 2:00pm UK time, roughly six weeks before the deadline — early enough for what you learn to change the proposal, late enough that you can arrive with real questions. Registration details are on the opportunity page.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating it as a research grant. Proposals whose main output is a paper rather than a demonstrator are misaligned with the stated aim.
  • Understating readiness. Vagueness about whether the platform exists, whether the sensor has flown, or whether the partner has agreed reads as immaturity in a call that hinges on immediate mobilisation.
  • Ignoring the 50/50 split. A proposal that is nominally atmospheric but really a general UAS project may compete in the wrong half of the portfolio. Be explicit about which area or areas you contribute to.
  • Budgeting international co-lead costs. They are not funded. Enter zero and describe the contribution.
  • Naming facilities that are not on the list. Only facilities from UKRI’s facility information list can be named, and you need prior agreement from them.
  • Missing the internal deadline. Only your research office can submit. Their cut-off is not NERC’s cut-off.
  • Using images as a word-count workaround. Tables and paragraphs supplied as images will get the application rejected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my project have to involve drones? No. The atmospheric half of the call explicitly says solutions do not need to be based on aerial platforms. Distributed sensing networks, fixed or mobile monitoring platforms and instrumentation projects are all in scope. The UAS half is different — there, uncrewed aerial capability must be central.

Can I ask for less than £300,000? The stated award range is £300,000 to £1 million FEC. Costs below that range fall outside the published range for this opportunity.

Is there a matched funding requirement? No. UKRI’s standard policy applies: there is no requirement for institutional matched funding beyond the standard FEC arrangement, and assessors must not base recommendations on levels of institutional matched funding. Direct and in-kind contributions from third-party project partners are encouraged.

Can a technician or engineer be the project lead? The eligibility text names research and technical staff, including engineers, technicians and specialists, among those who can apply, provided they are at an eligible UK research organisation. Confirm the specific arrangement with your research office, since institutional rules on who can hold a grant also apply.

What if my project needs animals, human participants or GM organisms? There are dedicated sections for each. If your project does not involve them, you confirm that in the Funding Service rather than skipping the section.

Will outcomes be published? NERC may publish funded outcomes on ‘What NERC has funded’, and successful applicants will have some personal information published on the UKRI Gateway to Research. Your Summary section is written on the assumption it may become public, so keep confidential material out of it.

If you have a sensor, a platform or an autonomy stack that is one integration push away from producing real environmental data, this is a rare call: full economic cost, capital allowed, and a panel that has been told to reward deliverability. The eleven weeks between opening and closing are the whole runway. Use the first two to check your procurement and permissions, and the rest to write.
