The Carlsberg Foundation has funded Danish basic research since 1876, and it does so on an unusual principle: it does not set themes. There is no priority area, no strategic programme, no call text telling you which societal challenge to address. The foundation asks researchers what they want to work on and then funds the strongest answers across the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. For researchers whose best idea keeps getting reshaped to fit somebody else’s programme brief, that alone makes this call worth a serious read.

The Autumn Call 2026 opened on 29 May 2026. Every instrument in it shares one deadline: 16:00 Danish time on 1 September 2026. That is a change from previous years — the foundation moved its autumn deadline from 1 October to 1 September starting with the 2026 cycle. If you are working from an old calendar entry or a colleague’s memory of the 2025 round, you are a month behind.

Funded projects must start no earlier than 1 January 2027 and no later than 1 September 2027.

What Each Instrument Actually Funds

Semper Ardens Advance is the flagship. Five years, DKK 15–25 million, and it runs only every other year — so if you miss 1 September 2026, the next window is 2028. It is for professors with an established international profile who want to attempt something genuinely risky. The guidelines ask for projects that “venture into new scientific territory,” and the foundation is explicit that it looks for potential synergies across research groups or fields rather than a safe extension of an existing programme. You may apply alone or as a team of two to four, with the main applicant a professor and co-applicants at associate professor or senior researcher level. Everyone on the team needs a tenured position at 80% FTE or more and must commit at least 50% of their active research time. Previous Advance recipients are locked out entirely — they cannot reapply and cannot join someone else’s team.

The budget covers consumables and equipment, travel and research stays, postdoc and PhD salaries, research assistants and project coordinators for up to twelve months each, and student assistants. It does not cover assistant professor salaries.

Semper Ardens Accelerate is the consolidation grant: up to DKK 7 million over three to five years for a newly appointed tenured associate professor or senior researcher building an independent group. The eligibility window is tight — you must have been appointed to your current position no more than two years before the deadline. Miss that by a few months and you are out, regardless of how strong the science is. Accelerate grantees also get a free research leadership course and access to the foundation’s networking events, which is a real benefit at that career stage and is easy to overlook when comparing headline numbers against other funders.

Monograph Fellowships buy one year of full-time protected writing. The foundation covers your entire salary plus DKK 8,000 a month in operating expenses for conferences and travel. It is aimed at humanities and social science researchers with 5 to 20 years since their first tenured appointment who have a book that needs uninterrupted time rather than incremental evenings. A publishing contract is not mandatory but you may attach one if you have it, and doing so is a strong signal.

Reintegration Fellowships are two-year postdoctoral positions for researchers coming home. You need a PhD from a Danish, Greenlandic or Faroese institution, no more than five years post-PhD, a demonstrated connection to Danish research, and — as a general rule — you must be abroad at the deadline. The award covers full salary, DKK 8,000 a month in operating expenses, and up to DKK 60,000 for special project expenses such as laboratory access or instrument procurement. Assistant professors are not eligible. Recent success rates for this instrument were 22% in 2025 and 33% in 2024, which makes it one of the better odds in the whole call.

Research Infrastructure and Digital Research Infrastructure both start at DKK 300,000 with no stated ceiling. The first funds equipment, apparatus, and subscription-based access to international facilities. The second funds register data purchases, database access, and the construction of databases or text corpora — an instrument that is genuinely useful to humanities and social science researchers and that most equipment schemes elsewhere do not cover. Neither instrument funds salaries or core facility running costs. Success rates for research infrastructure ran around 26–27% in 2024 and 2025.

Field Trips / Research Stays covers fieldwork abroad or extended stays at international institutions where the budget exceeds DKK 100,000. Science Communication (up to DKK 3 million) funds professional communication of research to non-scientific audiences. Carlsberg Mindelegat (up to DKK 200,000) is narrower: it supports researchers communicating their own research to the public.

Who This Fits — and Who It Does Not

The gate is institutional, not national. You do not have to be Danish. You have to be connected to the Danish research environment or to Danish science, and the majority of the funded activity has to happen in Denmark, Greenland or the Faroe Islands. A German professor holding a tenured chair at Aarhus University is squarely eligible for Advance. A Danish citizen who has spent fifteen years at a US institution with no plan to return is not, except through the Reintegration route.

Eligible administering institutions are Danish, Greenlandic and Faroese universities, state-owned museums, sector research institutions, artistic higher education institutions, and a named set of centres — VIVE, DIIS, GEUS, the Royal Danish Defence College, and the Danish Institutes in Rome and Athens. Hospitals and university colleges are excluded as administering institutions for the infrastructure instruments; if you are hospital-based, you need a university co-affiliation that can host the grant.

The instruments are stacked by career age, and the boundaries are hard:

• Newly tenured associate professor, appointed within two years → Accelerate
• Established professor with an international profile → Advance
• 5–20 years since first tenured appointment, humanities or social sciences, with a book → Monograph
• Within five years of a Danish PhD, currently abroad → Reintegration

Documented leave — parental leave, family care leave, illness, military service — is deducted from these calculations. If you are near a boundary, document the leave properly in your CV rather than hoping the panel infers it.

Note also that Accelerate applicants cannot hold a comparable career grant at the same time, or must at least be in the second half of one. Check your existing portfolio against this before you spend three weeks on a project description.

What You Have To Submit

The Carlsberg Foundation runs very short applications by international standards, and this is the single most underestimated part of the call. Everything is in English, in PDF, through CF-Grant.

Semper Ardens Advance asks for a five-page project description. Accelerate asks for three pages. Monograph and Reintegration ask for two pages plus one page of references. Research Infrastructure asks for two pages. Formatting is prescribed: Times New Roman 12pt, at least 2 cm margins, 1.5 line spacing. There is no room to hedge.

Common appendices across instruments:

• Itemised budget on the foundation’s template, one A4 page
• CV, maximum two pages per applicant
• List of publications, maximum two pages, with up to ten peer-reviewed works highlighted and briefly explained, and each entry clearly marked peer-reviewed or not
• Declaration from the administering host institution confirming your employment status
• The foundation’s “other funding” template — which must be completed whether or not you hold other funding
• Description of your research group (one page for individuals, two for teams)
• Reintegration only: one to three recommendations
• Monograph only: publishing contract, if you have one

Two practical warnings from the guidelines. First, the publication list may only include work that is published, accepted or in press, forthcoming with final acceptance, or submitted and under review — nothing aspirational. Second, do not sign uploaded PDFs with DocuSign or similar tools; the foundation states these interfere with assembling the final application PDF. After submission, verify the assembled PDF in CF-Grant yourself. The responsibility for a legible, complete file is explicitly yours.

Preparing a Competitive Application

Semper Ardens Advance had a success rate of about 7% in 2024 and 10% in 2022. Treat five pages at those odds as five pages that have to do real work.

The first page decides most outcomes. Reviewers of a themeless call read across an enormous span of fields, so the opening has to establish, in plain language, what is not currently known, why the standard approach has not resolved it, and what your project does differently. If your first paragraph could be lifted into a different proposal with three nouns swapped, rewrite it.

The word the foundation keeps using is breakthrough. It is genuinely asking for ambition, and reviewers on this panel have seen enough safe proposals to recognise one. But ambition without feasibility reads as naivety. The strongest applications pair a genuinely open question with concrete evidence that this specific team can attack it: pilot data, a method you have already built, access to a collection or cohort nobody else has.

Because the CV and publication list are capped at two pages each, curation matters more than volume. Ten publications with a sentence each explaining why they matter to this project beats a truncated list of forty. Use the explanation lines — they are the only place where you get to interpret your own record.

The budget page deserves an hour of real attention, not fifteen minutes at the end. It is one page and it is itemised, which means every line is visible. Salaries that do not match the workplan, or equipment with no justification in the text, are noticed. For Research Infrastructure, quotes are optional but recommended — attach them.

Finally, start the host institution declaration early. It requires a signature from someone in your administration who is fielding the same request from every colleague in the same week. This is the most common cause of a strong application missing a hard 16:00 deadline.

Common Mistakes

Working from last year’s deadline. The autumn deadline moved to 1 September in 2026. This is the single highest-cost error available in this call.

Assuming Advance runs annually. It does not — it is a biennial instrument. Accelerate, Monograph, Reintegration, both infrastructure instruments and Field Trips run yearly; Science Communication and Carlsberg Mindelegat run half-yearly.

Missing the two-year appointment window for Accelerate. Check your formal appointment date, not the date you started acting in the role.

Applying to Reintegration while already back in Denmark. The general rule is that you must be abroad at the deadline. If your situation is unusual, contact the secretariat before you write, not after you submit.

Ignoring the excluded costs. Advance does not fund assistant professor salaries. The infrastructure instruments do not fund salaries or core facilities. Building a budget around an ineligible cost wastes the strongest part of your case.

Digital signatures on appendices. The guidelines specifically warn against DocuSign-style tools on uploaded PDFs.

Treating “no themes” as “no criteria.” The absence of a strategic theme does not mean the foundation funds anything. It funds basic research judged on originality and quality. A proposal built around an application or a deliverable rather than a question is a poor fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a Danish citizen? No. The research must be carried out by Danish researchers or by foreign researchers connected to the Danish research environment or Danish science, with the majority of the work in Denmark, Greenland or the Faroe Islands.

Can I apply to more than one instrument in the same call? The instruments target distinct career stages and purposes, and most researchers are only eligible for one. When will I hear back? The foundation’s published guidelines for this call do not state a decision date. What is fixed is the project start window: no earlier than 1 January 2027 and no later than 1 September 2027, which means decisions arrive in time to plan a start inside that window.

Is there a co-financing requirement for the infrastructure grants? The guidelines do not state one.

Can I write in Danish? No. All application documents and appendices must be in English.

What are my realistic odds? Published success rates vary sharply by instrument: roughly 7% for Semper Ardens Advance in 2024, 22% for Reintegration Fellowships in 2025 and 33% in 2024, and 26–27% for Research Infrastructure in 2024–2025. Choose the instrument you actually fit rather than the one with the largest headline number.

What if my project spans the humanities and the natural sciences? That is explicitly welcome. Monograph Fellowships name interdisciplinary fields “that may branch into the natural sciences,” and Advance prioritises synergies across fields.

With the deadline at 16:00 on 1 September 2026, the practical sequence for anyone starting now is: confirm your eligibility against the specific instrument guideline today, request the host institution declaration this week, draft the project description against the page limit rather than trimming to it afterwards, and build the itemised budget alongside the workplan so the two agree. Then upload early enough to inspect the assembled PDF before the system closes.
