Who can apply

The 2026/27 call is for registered undergraduate students at ACU member universities. You should confirm that your current university appears in the ACU member list before preparing the application. The host institution also needs to be an ACU member institution. The host must be in another Commonwealth country, because the grant is intended for international academic participation rather than attendance at a programme in the student’s home country.

Applicants must also meet the citizenship or refugee-status condition for the relevant award allocation. UK citizens are considered for the five UK-allocated awards. Citizens of a Commonwealth country other than the UK, and people holding refugee status in a Commonwealth country other than the UK, are considered for the other five awards. Finally, the proposed programme must have an official start date between 1 December 2026 and 31 August 2027. Check the date issued by the host programme rather than relying on an approximate season. If the host has several sessions, identify the exact session you are proposing to attend and make sure its start date falls inside this window.

What to identify before applying

Start with the academic purpose. Write down the programme’s name, host university, country, subject or theme, dates, and relationship to your current course. Then explain what you expect to learn and how that learning fits into your future study or career plans. The ACU is asking about a specific academic experience, so a general wish to travel or meet people from other countries will not replace a clear account of the programme itself.

You should research the programme directly through the host university. The ACU does not provide a complete catalogue of eligible programmes across all member institutions and disciplines. Check the host’s own admissions information, fee schedule, dates, and acceptance process. If applications for the programme are not yet open, the ACU application guidance allows correspondence from the host confirming that it would be willing to consider you, subject to its normal admissions process and the programme running as planned.

Also check both sides of the membership requirement. Confirm your home institution’s ACU membership and the proposed host institution’s membership. A programme at a non-member institution is not eligible, even if its subject and dates otherwise look suitable. Keep a record of the relevant host contact and the programme information so that your application and supporting letter use consistent names and dates.

How to apply for the current cycle

The current application route is the ACU online application system. Follow these steps:

Do not wait until the final afternoon: a registration problem, missing letter, or incomplete required field can prevent an otherwise ready application from being submitted.

Statements and supporting documents

The application form has sections for eligibility, a cost breakdown, and written statements. The current Application Guidance requests three statements:

• Statement 1 should explain why you want to participate in the chosen programme and how your studies or interests fit its theme. The guidance gives a length of 150–250 words.
• Statement 2 should explain what you will bring to and gain from the programme, including your personal development and future study or career plans. The guidance gives a length of 150–250 words.
• Statement 3 should briefly explain how you plan to share and communicate the knowledge gained during the programme. The guidance gives a length of 100–150 words.

You must provide a letter from your current institution confirming its support. It should come from a departmental head or academic/course supervisor, be signed, and appear on official institutional headed paper. The letter should strongly support the application and confirm that you are an undergraduate student at the university named in the form.

You must also provide a letter from the proposed programme host confirming that it would be happy to accept you for the course if you receive funding. An official offer or acceptance letter can serve this purpose. If the host programme has not opened its own applications, the guidance allows correspondence confirming that the host would be willing to consider you, subject to its normal admissions process and the programme proceeding as planned.

Request both letters early. Give your home department and the host enough information to identify the exact programme, its dates, and your role in it. Check that the names in each letter match the information in your form. A letter that omits the undergraduate status, names a different session, or comes from an unapproved contact may require a last-minute correction.

Building a credible cost breakdown

Use the cost section to connect each amount to the proposed programme. The ACU FAQ lists programme fees, flights, accommodation, food, and visa fees as examples of costs the grant can cover. You should therefore separate the categories rather than writing one unexplained total. Use the host’s published fee information where available, and label estimates clearly when a final price is not yet available.

Include only costs that relate to attending the programme. If another source will pay part of a cost, make that clear so the ACU can understand the amount you are asking for. If your estimated total is higher than GBP 5,000, explain the gap and how you expect to meet it. A transparent budget is more useful than a request that simply uses the maximum amount without showing what it covers.

Remember that a grant award does not itself guarantee admission to the host programme. Keep following the host’s normal application process and do not describe a place as confirmed unless the host has confirmed it. Where the host is willing to consider you after funding is secured, include the correspondence permitted by the ACU guidance and describe the position accurately in your statements.

Work backwards from the closing time. First confirm membership and find a related programme. Next ask the host for acceptance or conditional-support correspondence and ask your departmental head or academic/course supervisor for the institutional letter. Draft the three statements around the actual programme rather than adapting a generic study-abroad essay. Then complete the cost breakdown, upload the documents, and submit through MyACU with time to resolve validation errors.

Common mistakes to avoid

Treating this as a full scholarship. The Global Grant supports attendance at a short-term academic programme. It does not fund a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

Choosing an ineligible activity. An internship, study tour, or similar activity is not automatically a summer or winter school. Check the ACU’s current definition before applying.

Using a non-member host. Both the home university and the proposed programme host need to fit the ACU membership requirements. Verify the host rather than assuming that an internationally known university is a member.

Leaving the host evidence until the end. A conditional letter can be acceptable when the programme’s own applications are not open, but you still need host correspondence. Start that conversation early.

Missing the UTC deadline. The application must be submitted through MyACU by 15:00 UTC on 25 August 2026. A draft saved in the system is not the same as a submitted application.

Repeating old eligibility language.
